One of my all time favorite artists of quilting fabrics is McKenna Ryan. She recreates absolutely adorable nature scenes such as humming birds, owls, sunflowers, and bears. A great idea for a Christmas quilt would be using the multi-block quilting kits, Once Upon a Star. The quilting fabric displays penguins, walrus, polar bears, and seals in Santa hats celebrating Christmastime in the snow. Another McKenna Ryan original fabric squares quilt kit I adore is Storybook Farm. The quilt block kit contains sweet images of life on the farm with cows, pigs, and chickens.

Design your own story quilt with Denyse Schmidt’s Quilt-It Kit which quilting tools for fifteen colorful and easy quilt projects. This inexpensive quilting kit will inspire beginners and expert handcrafters in creating long-lasting gifts for their loved ones. Quilters rave about Denyse Schmidt’s Quilt-It Kit designs as being modern, expressive, and fun! The quilt squares kit comes with an instruction manual that is a helpful resource on the basics for those just beginning to quilt.

The kaleidoscope quilt block works like the kaleidoscopes we loved as children. A piece of fabric is mirrored eight times to create a repeated image of the quilt pattern. The quilting patterns that you can make with this style of quilting kit are nothing short of amazing! Even a beginner can turn out a masterpiece quilt in a blink of an eye!

Quilting refers to stitching three layers of fabric together; the quilt top, batting in the center, and the backing. Patchwork quilts or pieced block quilts were not the major form of quilting kits until the middle of the 19th century. When you think about quilting bees, it is easy to picture women sitting in a circle sewing a new quilt for a bride to be or welcoming a birth.

The “Quilt Code” was a system of African symbols sewn into quilts by American slaves. These quilts were said to have hung in windows or from clotheslines to display secret messages to slaves whom were seeking freedom from slavery. Although, the quilt code story has not been authenticated, it shows how quilting has been intertwined in US history.

Underground Railroad Quilt Codes:

Dresden Plate Quilt Block- look for the Dresden plate windows in Canada

Monkey Wrench- Gather tools for the journey ahead

Flying Geese - Head north

Tumbling Blocks - Gather food, clothing, and anything useable as weapons

Drunkard’s Path - Travel in a staggered path

Women during the Civil War era faced many hardships with the country in turmoil. Quilting was a common thread which bonded communities. Quilters shared their personal tragedies through quilt blocks that were seen as journal entries. Quilting squares were often used of fabric taken from old clothing of a husband or sweetheart who was away fighting in the war.

Medallion quilts are made around a central display. The center is sometimes a solid piece of fabric or appliquéd motif such as a Tree of Life, American eagle, or a large star pattern. The middle area is typically surrounded by several solid or pieced borders.

The Crazy Quilt design was the most popular quilting style in the last half of the 19th century. The handmade coverings of those days were smaller than usual bed sized quilts and made without batting. Crazy quilts were made of abstract shapes and usually the quilts were used as decorative throws. The maker typically sewed elaborate stitching along the seams and used embroidery for embellishment. Many times, embroidered flowers, birds, and sometimes a web and spider for good luck were added.

Features of quilting kits include reproduction fabrics which is a much sought after choice among quilters. Along with dazzling good looks future grandkids can inherit handmade quilts to hand down to their own children. Do not wait to get your hands on these awe inspiring quilting kits!

There is no limit to the creative designs you can make with the vast array of quality quilting kits available. Quilting is a rewarding hobby that is generating renewed interest for people of all ages. Among my favorite heirlooms is a quilt that my Grandmother made me from pieces of a quilt that belonged to her Mother. Quilts are priceless hand me downs that can remain with your family for generations. A quilt can become a storybook used to record an historical world event or to cover a more personal journey such as a birth or wedding.

The art of quilting has a checkered past that can trace its origin to the ancient world. From medieval Europe to the early days of America, quilting kits were basically quilt blocks of fabric saved and reused for handmade coverings. Quilt making has been dated as far back as the ancient Egyptians. The earliest surviving quilt from around the First century BC was discovered in a Mongolian cave.

Quilting blocks have often been used to commemorate political events throughout history. For example, in 1846, quilting squares were designed referring to the boundary dispute between Canada and the US, a block which referred to a Revolutionary War defeat in battle, the Lincoln Log Cabin quilt patterns in honor of President Lincoln, and the Jacob’s Ladder block also known as the Underground Railroad to honor the brave passengers and conductors of the Underground Railroad.

With so much history wrapped up in a simple handmade covering, it is comforting to see that so many folks are searching for unique quilting kits to keep the tradition continuing. To begin making your own one of a kind quilts, click on the right to see the finest collection assembled including quilting fabrics, easy quilt patterns, charm packs, and precut quilt kits.
